Watercolour on paper
Portrait of Diana Rait Kerr, first Curator of Collections (1945-1968) and one of the first lady Members of MCC (1999), depicted in front of the art and artefacts she accessioned during her time at MCC by Royal Academician John Ward.
Diana, daughter of the Secretary of MCC Colonel Rowan Scrope Rait Kerr (1891 – 1961) was responsible for the establishment of the Imperial Cricket Memorial Gallery in 1953 and cricket exhibitions for the National Book League and the Festival of Britain. The catalogue she established remains the foundation for the classification of today’s collections.
Ward trained at The Royal College of Art and was greatly influenced by the painter-illustrator Barnett Freedman. He was artistic mentor to The Prince of Wales and regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer exhibition and Royal Society of Portrait Painters annual show. He was commissioned to paint a series of the Club’s Secretaries and has five paintings in the collection.
