Lancaster Park, Christchurch, 1951
W.A. Sutton (1917-2000)
Oil on canvas
The first cricket match to take place at Lancaster Park was between Canterbury and Alfred Shaw's English XI in January 1882. But it would not be until 1930 that Test cricket was played here, Maurice Allom taking a hat-trick as England ran out winners by 8 wickets. The ground has often favoured bowlers; in 1971 Derek Underwood claimed match figures of 12 for 97 here (6 for 12 in the first innings) while in 1983/84 England were bowled out for 82 and 93 as they lost by an innings. As with most other New Zealand grounds it is a multi-sports venue, hosting regular rugby matches and having in the past staged cycling, athletics and even trotting contests. During WWII, the playing area was used for cultivating potatoes.
