George Osbaldeston (1786 – 1866)
‘The Squire’ is best known for his hunting and steeple-chasing exploits but he excelled at all sports. His cricket career started at Eton, but ended soon after he sustained a fracture to his right leg in 1821. He had earlier removed his name from the MCC list of members in a fit of pique. He was a tremendously fast bowler, a hard slashing hitter, and a notable single wicket player. On one occasion at Godstone, Kent, he took all ten wickets. Osbaldeston became MP for East Retford in 1812, but did not stand for re-election in the next Parliament.
