In its early years MCC’s club colours were sky blue. Exactly when, or why, the change to the current red and yellow occurred is not recorded, but we know it occurred some time in the 1860s. It is thought that it may have been the Club’s way of acknowledging its debt to William Nicholson who advanced the Club the money to purchase the freehold of Lord’s. Nicholson made his fortune selling gin; the labels on his bottles were bordered in red and yellow. Nicholson later advanced more money to help build the current Pavilion.
