Framed and mounted, black and white, West Indies team photograph. Players seated and standing in front of pavilion and stands at Old Trafford or Oval (to be confirmed). Signed by the players on the image. Stamped ‘Day & Night Wear, William Holling & Co. Ltd’. ‘The West Indies Cricket Team (1928) clothed throughout in Viyella, New Zealand and Australian Cricket Teams also chose ‘Viyella’ for their sports outfits’. This was the first WI team to play in England since gaining test nation status.
From its earliest days as a Test team the West Indies produced Afro-Caribbean cricketers of immense talent, such as Learie Constantine and George Headley. But the idea of a black captain was as abhorrent to the West Indian authorities as the idea of a professional captain was in England.
