Albert Chevallier Tayler RA (1862–1925)
Pastel on paper
Lancashire and England batter J.T. (Johnny) Tyldesley, playing a square cut. Tyldesley was famous for this stroke, which he often lofted over the slips. C.B. Fry said of it “he threw the bat at the ball without letting go of the handle.”
Sketched by English artist Albert Chevallier Tayler for The Empire's Cricketers publication of 1905.
Issued in twelve parts, each publication contained four lithographic portraits published for the Fine Art Society by Dawbarn and Ward. This drawing is one of a set of eight, the property of a Mr Hawkins to whom 17 were given by the late Lord Northcliffe. The remaining nine were destroyed during the Second World War.
