Batting helmet of Brian Lara, 1994
Worn by Brian Lara for Warwickshire v. Durham, 1994
Purchased David Fulton Benefit Auction, Lord’s 2006
Brian Lara had been hit on the helmet in the previous game against Middlesex at Lord’s. As a consequence of that he borrowed this helmet - with the wrong crest - from David Fulton for his record-breaking innings of 501* at Edgbaston.
The helmet with no grille is similar to the batting helmet in baseball. First invented in 1907 - by a player who had been hit – baseball helmets were not widely used until the 1950s and only became compulsory in the 1970s.
