The first three Cricket World Cups (1975, 1979 and 1983) were held in England. The world cups were better known as Prudential Cups as Prudential plc (financial services company) were the main sponsors.
Eight teams participated in the first tournament: Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, and the West Indies together with Sri Lanka and a composite team from East Africa. One notable omission was South Africa, who were banned from international cricket due to apartheid. The tournament was won by the West Indies and again by them in the next World Cup (1979)
The 1983 event saw India, an outsider quoted at 66–1 to win by bookmakers before the competition began, crowned champions.
The era of Prudential Cup trophies was over by 1987. The World Cup then shifted bases and was held in the Indian sub-continent for the first time. Reliance was the new sponsor for the tournament and the cup was called the Reliance Cup.
Garrard & Co, whom created the cup, was founded by George Wickes in London in 1735. Its current base is at Albemarle Street in Mayfair, London. It was the Crown Jeweler of the UK, charged with the upkeep of the British Crown Jewels, from 1843 to 2007.
