Unspliced, twined handle. Straight blade. Distinct spine. Pronounced toe with very worn inside edge. Maker’s mark on toe. Inscription on face. Possible tally marks on reverse.
Bat inscribed ‘Little Joey, in 1792-1793’ (died of cricket, l.b.w.)
The inscription may refer to John Ring (1758-1800) who died as a result of a blow in the face by a ball bowled by his brother, George. William Beldham credited the introduction of the first lbw law, in 1774, to the shabby tactics of John Ring, but as he was then only 16 and, moreover, the inscription anticipated his death by 7-8 years, both its inference and Beldham’s statement are in doubt.
