Whereas the Currie Cup trophy is still jealously coveted as the domestic rugby union trophy in South Africa, cricket’s trophy has changed both name and format since South Africa’s readmission to world cricket. It became known as the Castle Cup from 1990, then the SuperSport Series from 1996 and since 2012 has been the Sunfoil Series.
As with the competition, so with the teams, several of which changed their names to reflect the metamorphosis in the political situation. Finally in 2004, the format of both first class and limited overs cricket was completely `rationalised’ with eleven provincial teams reduced to six new franchises.
Western Province and Boland merged to form the Cape Cobras; Griqualand West and Free State are now the Knights, Eastern Province and Border the Warriors, North West and Gauteng the Lions, Northerns and Easterns became the Titans and KwaZulu-Natal became the Dolphins.
