A Test match in progress with a view of Lord's Ground seen from 'A' enclosure, (site of Warner Stand) with W.G. Grace facing the bowling from the Pavilion End. In the left foreground Lord Harris in a red, black and gold striped I Zingari blazer talks to a lady holding a scorecard. A woman in a gold dress (Lily Langtry) stares out at the viewer, pointedly away from Prince Edward and Princess Alexandra as they walk around the boundary. As well as many well-known cricketing personalities, the picture is thought to portray several of the future King Edward VII’s mistresses. The match shown is clearly imaginary as the players on the field cannot be linked to any one game at Lord’s.
Sir Robert Ponsonby Staples was a significant portraitist of the late Victorian period. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy at the age of 22 and his painting of Gladstone introducing the Home Rule Bill still hangs in the House of Lords. Less is known of Barrable, whose surviving works are mainly of interiors and domestic subjects.
