Portrait of William Nicholson, 1885
Frank Holl R.A. (1845-1888), engraver
William Nicholson was an English distiller and Liberal Party politician who sat in the House of Commons in two periods between 1866 and 1885. He was director and chairman of his family firm J&W Nicholson and Co.
It was Nicholson who crucially offered to lend MCC at preferential rate of interest, a sum of money to purchase the freehold of Lord's from Issac Marsden. His proposal was unanimously accepted at a special meeting on 2nd May 1866. It is thought that as mark of gratitude MCC shortly afterwards changed the Club's colours from its original light blue to the renowned orange and yellow used on the bottles of the Nicholson Firm. However, no record exists to confirm the truth of this supposition.
Nicholson went on to lend further money for the use of the construction of the current Pavilion which is now one of only three Grade II listed buildings still in use for sporting purposes.
