Cream, V-neck, long sleeve sweater. Blue, red and blue stripe at neck, wrists and waist. 'Gill' on care instructions in black felt tip. Possibly worn by Gillian 'Gill' McConway
In 1934 a special committee was chosen to select a suitable playing outfit for the Tour of Australia and New Zealand. Eventually, they settled on white blouses, white divided skirts (or culottes) and white knee-length socks. Both Australia and New Zealand quickly followed and when the Western Australia side wore trousers during the tour, the secretary of South Australia protested: ‘We women don't want to ape the men. We want to play the game and be as feminine as possible.’
This uniform, in the English case, lasted right up until 1997 but a change in attitude, increased professionalism and athleticism rendered it increasingly impractical. The move to kit identical to that of their male counterparts placed the women's game, visually, on a more equal footing and other countries have followed suit.
