Eton vs. Harrow, Lord's, circa 1889
By Albert Ludovici Jnr (1852-1932)
This picture, like that by Chevallier Tayler which it complements, shows Lord's during the Eton vs Harrow match before the 2nd Pavilion was replaced in 1889/90.
The artist exhibited at the Royal Acasdemy between 1880 and 1897 having moved to London after his marriage in 1875. He taught art - notably to female pupils - and was a firm friend and colleague of James Whistler. He observed the streets and parks of the city in particular, especially at the height of the Season, and produced numbers of small panel studies of fashionable London life. These relied on a visual shorthand which he had developed in order to record passing effects as swiftly as possible and the best of his work is very fresh and often rapidly-painted.
