The Scorer, William Davies of Brighton, 1842
Thomas Henwood (1797-1861)
Oil on millboard
William Davies was scorer at Lewes Priory Cricket Club in Sussex and is shown here surrounded by the tools of his trade: a board with notebook and quill to keep score and, at his right foot, two bats, a ball and wickets.
Davies also worked at Lord’s and this is the earliest known portrait of a scorer, painted by Sussex-based artist Thomas Henwood who specialised in country scenes and pastimes.
