England batsman Andrew Flintoff depicted during a training session at the Basin Reserve in Wellington. St Mark's church at the foot of Mount Cook in the background.
England batsman Andrew Flintoff depicted here during a training session at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, New Zealand by MCC Young Artist of the Year Nancy Bixby.
Bixby, an art graduate from the Ruskin School of Art, was commissioned by MCC to document the 2001-2 England tour to New Zealand. Travelling with the team she recorded players and the surrounding area.
Primarily influenced by Impressionism, a style characterised by broken brushstrokes and the changing qualities of light, Bixby depicts Flintoff here under harsh light to create a sense of immediacy and movement. She also focuses on the luminous quality of the pohutukawa trees in the background surrounding St Mark's church.
The Basin is one of New Zealand’s most famous sports grounds and the only one to be granted National Heritage Place status. The area was created in 1855 by a major earthquake and has been reshaped and built upon to provide an international sports venue. It has been one of New Zealand’s main international cricket venues for well over a century.
