Oil on board
Posthumous portrait of cricketer, administrator and historian Harry Altham, wearing an Oxford University Cricket Club sweater against a Winchester background.
During his playing career Altham played for Hampshire, Oxford University and Surrey. He was later a teacher and Master in Charge of Cricket at Winchester College for thirty years. He served on the MCC Committee, including time as President in 1959 and wrote the MCC Cricket Coaching Book published in 1952.
Although artist Edmund Nelson didn’t meet Altham, he was able to capture a likeness, freshness and sense of immediacy true to the British Impressionism style, which saw artists primarily paint subjects outside under natural light.
