Staffordshire, creamware, jug. Baluster form printed in black with a cricket match and a horse race. Barrel form with handle. Two transfer printed vignettes and floral swags, ‘Grand Cricket Match played in Lord's Ground Mary-le-bone June 20 and following day between the Earls of Winchelsea and Darnley for 1000 Guineas' and 'Oatland Stakes at Ascot. Maker’s name ‘Fletcher & Co’ Shelton’ under pictures.

The illustration on this jug shows an early match at the Lord’s ground. Typically for the time the two teams were raised by cricket-loving aristocrats, the Earls of Winchilsea and Darnley, and played for a wager of 1,000 guineas.
