Bat of [Sir] Leonard Hutton, 1938. Bat used in scoring 364 v The Australians at Kennington Oval, 1938. Made by H. Gradidge. Stamped on blade: Short Handle; Gradidge, Woolwich, London. Humped back. Treble-sprung handle. on label: Gradidge's guarantee the blade of this bat to be made from unbleached Salix Coerulea close bark willow. Inscription on silver shield on face: Actual Gradidge bat with which / Len Hutton / Made the World's record score in / Test Matches / 364 at [the] Oval / 1938. Autographed on back: England side and a cartoon by Tom Webster. Inscription on back, top right-hand corner: 364, 5th Test. Len Hutton used this bat to make his then world Test record innings of 364 against
the Australians at the Oval in 1938. It is signed by him and his England team-mates from that match and inscribed with a cartoon by Tom Webster. Webster produced a cartoon every day for almost 20 years and his work is an unrivalled humorous sporting commentary between the two world wars.
