Lord Hawke Touring XI Blazer, worn by TL Taylor on the Tour to New Zealand 1902-3
Donated by Hugh NC Hearn, 1960 M.60.17
Before Lord Hawke became President and Treasurer of MCC, he was one of the most prolific tourists of his age (1887-1912). He enrolled on nine tours altogether, travelling to the USA, India and Ceylon, Australia, South Africa, West Indies and Argentina. Initially as President of Yorkshire he refused permission for his county players to travel in similar fashion, though he was willing to compensate them for this. Only when MCC took up the `sponsorship’ and organisation of tours did he relent, believing that MCC would show them just as much consideration as Yorkshire.
