In 1861 Spiers and Pond wrote to the famous novelist Charles Dickens, who had recently conducted a successful reading tour of the United States, and offered him £10,000 to undertake a tour of Australia. Dickens never replied. Had he done so, the first English cricket tour of Australia might have been delayed for some years.
