As well as different colour caps, there is often a motif or coat of arms representing club, county or country. These come in the form of attached badges, machine embroidered designs or intricate bullion work embroidery.
M.2013.67 Northamptonshire County Cricket Club Cap, 1905-10
This cap is distinguishable from the Hampshire CCC cap which also has a Tudor rose, by the lack of a crown or coronet above.
M.53.22 Marylebone Cricket Club Cap, 1880 Donated by H M Binns
This rather ornate pill box style cap was common for its time, but the style soon changed to the more recognisable and practical peaked form.
M.2015.960 Cap of E M Grace, c 1895
This cap was made by Mrs E M Grace, but the colour and pattern does not relate directly to any of the clubs Grace played for. Early MCC colours were pale blue, but by the 1870’s they had adopted the familiar ‘egg & bacon’ or gold and red. Caps with such a minimal peak were in fashion until just after the First Word War.
