coloured engraving of the Academy students playing cricket, after the original in the Long Room
This copper engraving by the English book illustrator Charles Grignion was published by the General Advertiser in 1748. It is the earliest known engraving of a cricket match taken from Francis Hayman’s ‘A Cricket Match at Mary-le-Bone Fields’.
Copper engravings were one of the first methods of commercially reproducing images for books and magazines. Copied in mirror image on a copper plate with a sharp graver tool, the image was then covered in warm ink. The plate was then pressed on to moist paper to transfer the image. This print was later hand coloured and mounted for the purpose of display.
