William Bromley (fl. 1835-1888)
Oil on canvas
Depicted during his playing career wearing whites, a blue cravat and formal shoes, John Wisden stands on a cricket field, possibly Trevor Square, holding a cricket ball.
Wisden played for Sussex County Cricket Club from 1845 to 1863 as well as Middlesex and Kent. He was a member of the first touring side to the United States and Canada in 1859 with George Parr’s side. He later founded the famous Wisden Cricketers' Almanack, the definitive reference book containing articles and statistics, published every year since 1864.
Painted by William Bromley, a London historical and genre painter, who frequently exhibited at the Society of British Artists, the British Institution and the Royal Academy.
