Portrait of Rachael Heyhoe Flint (1939-2017), 2010
James Lloyd (1971-)
Oil on canvas
Sketched in paint from life, over four sittings in the Committee Room at Lord’s, former England captain Rachael Heyhoe Flint is depicted wearing an MCC brooch, specially commissioned for her as the first woman to join the MCC Committee in 2004.
Heyhoe Flint was the first woman to captain her country at Lord’s and was the driving force behind the Cricket World Cup, first played for and won by her team in 1973, two years after the ODI format was introduced. Furthermore, in her 10-year spell as England captain she never lost a Test match. She was an all-round sportswoman and double international, playing field hockey in the 1960s.
Artist James Lloyd is interested in both the professional and personal side of his sitters. He said: ‘She always has lots of banter with the Pavilion back door stewards and is very friendly and chatty. I hope to capture some of her sparkle.’
