Portrait of Reginald Hankey (1832-1886)
John Corbet Anderson (1827-1907)
Watercolour drawing for lithograph
Oxford University and Surrey batter Reginald Hankey is depicted on a rural cricket field in front of a tent. Hankey’s cricket career was brief and he is chiefly remembered for a thrilling innings of 70 for the Gentlemen against the Players at Lord’s in 1857.
Produced between 1850 and 1860, the cricket lithographs of John Corbet Anderson were hugely popular in the years before photography became widespread. Featuring many of the greatest players from a period of great enthusiasm for cricket, they remain among the most desirable and collectible cricket prints.
