Ranji was the first Indian cricketer to make a significant mark on the game. The supple wrist style now so familiar in players from the subcontinent was a revelation to western eyes and often confused with poor technique. His free-scoring style also drew criticism, as Lord Harris wrote in his introduction to Stray Thoughts on Indian Cricket: “To wear down good bowling, and patiently wait for many overs for a run here and a run there, is easier for the phlegmatic Anglo-Saxon than for the excitable Asiatic.”
