Andrew Festing (1941)
Oil on canvas
Cricket writer and commentator E W Swanton depicted in front of his bookshelf by self-taught British portraitist and ex-army officer Andrew Festing.
Swanton was perhaps the most enduring and influential cricket journalist of the twentieth century, working as a cricket correspondent for the Evening Standard and the Daily Telegraph between 1927 and 1975. He was editorial director of The Cricketer from 1967 to 1988 and also found acclaim as a BBC broadcaster with a rare gift for concise summary. He briefly played county cricket for Middlesex County Cricket Club and served on the MCC Committee from 1975 to 1984. Later in 1989 he was elected Honorary Life Vice-President.
During the Second World War Swanton was captured by the Japanese in the fall of Singapore, and spent three years as a prisoner of war. His well-thumbed copy of the 1939 Wisden Cricketers' Almanack resides in the MCC Museum along with a make-shift cricket ball made in the camp.
