Description
Duncan Fearnley bat signed by West Indies (1976), Essex, Somerset and Leicestershire players. Black rubber grip over string wound handle. Maker’s logo, stylised wicket in black, on clear plastic adhesive sticker on reverse.
In 1976 England’s South African-born captain, Tony Greig, raised the hackles of the touring West Indies players by saying of them in an interview “when they’re down they grovel; I intend to make them grovel”. The fact that the words were spoken in a South African accent with apartheid still at its height created an unfortunate image of black slaves cowering before white masters. In the end it was Clive Lloyd’s West Indies team who made England, and Greig, grovel.
