Men of the Day. No. 816
Mr Gilbert Laird Jessop.
He is quite a young fellow lately down from Cambridge – after being a schoolmaster: which is unusual. Yet is he a public character of the greatest sort, for he is, perhaps, the great “draw” of this Cricket Season. As Captain of the Cambridge Eleven he did well; as a County Captain the eyes of the World are upon him – and that, happily, without enlarging his head. For he is a nice boy who knows his place: which is at the wicket. From the moment he gets there he is always hitting, and during the present season his style is better than ever. He is probably the busiest and most active hitter we have had; certainly e is the biggest amateur cricketer of the Century, as many a fast bowler who has seen him jump out and hit him will say; for his quickness of eye and body has made him a terror to them all. He can also bowl fast, though he does less this way than he did before his illness last winter; while as a field he covers more ground than most people think, gathers the ball well and returns it with a celerity that has amazed many a good batsman. It has indeed been said of him that he saves almost as many runs as he makes. He has captained Gloucestershire for two seasons, and Gloucester idolises him; he plays hockey well and Rugby football with much dash; he will go to Australia with Mr MacLaren in the autumn, and he devotes his leisure to business in the Stock Exchange, where h is almost a s popular as hi is on the cricket pitch.
The public knows him as the “Croucher”; to his friends he is “Jessopos.”
