Transvaal Cap of Jonathan `Pom Pom’ Fellows Smith Acquired at auction by MCC, 2015
Russell Endean “’would walk into a list of the best fifteen cricketers ever to have played for South Africa”’, his team mate Johnny Waite once said. He was a wonderful sportsman, playing hockey for South Africa as well cricket and although he started as a wicket keeper he was renowned as a fielder. In this he exemplified a tradition for South African teams which stretches from the 1920s through to Colin Bland in the 1960s, Jonty Rhodes in the 1990s and beyond. He took 41 catches in his Test career, none more breath-taking than a diving one-hander on the boundary at the MCG to dismiss Keith Miller off Hugh Tayfield.
He also maintained a reputation in South Africa for fast scoring and hard hitting, becoming the first South African to hit a century before lunch for Transvaal against Free State. His fellow Transvaal teammate Jonathan Fellows Smith secured his place on the 1960 tour of England with an average of over 70 in the 1958/-59 season in South Africa. His scrapbook of that tour is on display elsewhere in the exhibition.
