Description
Long handled turning chisel. Slightly shaped, wood handle with brass ferrule. Broad, steel blade with cutting edge angled to about 60 degrees across the blade. Used by Leonard Dowse to make cricket bats. Exact use in this process unknown, possibly used to remove branches from willow, or in 'splitting out' - turning willow logs into clefts - the first stage of making bat blades. Probably more likely a turning chisel to shape wood on the lathe, as a froe would be used to cleave logs (HL 2018)
