Description
Glazed, earthenware, Staffordshire pottery figure of a bowler. Has side whiskers and is holding a ball in his right hand, left hand on chest. Wearing a spotted shirt and dull orange cap. Blue jacket draped to side. Wide, paddle shaped bat leaning against wicket. Plain, flat back.
Parr, of Nottinghamshire, and Caesar, of Surrey were two of the stars of the All England XI which toured the country playing against local teams in the mid-19th century. Their nationwide fame led to the mass-production of memorabilia such as these figures.
