Description
Yellow fabric covered helmet with detachable plastic ear guards. Embroidered Australian crest, with green kangaroo and emu, fixed to front.
Gilchrist debut 1996. Museum label attributes this to Adam Gilchrist. According to RB this was not worn by Gilchrist.
Helmets are nowadays essential not only for batsmen but for close fielders too. They are now in fact compulsory for those under 19 either batting or fielding within 15 yards of the bat. In Twenty20 matches one or two wicket keepers have started to wear the traditional baseball catchers’ mask which is lighter and more easily removed.
