Description
Minature Grandfather clock made from beam in cottage of David Harris. Design: imitates a typical grandfather clock but without front opening in waist as the (round) clock framed in the pediment has no pendulum or weights; it is wound by a small door at the back. The clock has black Roman numerals and a gilt rim. On the plinth is a metal plaque inscribed: David Harris (1755-1803)/the great Hambledon and England bowler/The case of this clock is carved from/a beam taken from a cottage in Crookham/Hampshire, occupied by David Harris at/the time of his death./ The clock was presented to/Mr. Claude S. Buckingham by cricketers/of Crookham and neighbouring parishes in 1911. It passed to M.C.C. as a legacy/on Mr Buckingham's death in 1960. Below the door at the back is attached a newspaper cutting headed: A much prized gift; Souvenir of cricket stalwart.
