Herbert Holt (1891)
Oil on canvas
Half length, three quarter turned, portrait of Lord Hawke.
Wearing a dark green blazer and cap with embroidered
white flower of Yorkshire County Cricket Club.
A towering figure of cricket’s ‘Golden Age’, Lord Hawke
captained Cambridge, Yorkshire and England, was
President of MCC 1914 - 1918, Treasurer from 1932 -
1937 and Chairman of the England Selectors. A keen
organiser of tours, he led his own team overseas on six
tours during the 1890s. It was under Lord Hawke’s
leadership that Yorkshire established itself as the
leading first-class county. Captain of the county from
1883 to 1910 and President from 1897 to 1937, Hawke
was a keen proponent of the exclusive policy of solely
choosing players born in Yorkshire, despite having
himself been born near Gainsborough in Lincolnshire.
