Rupert Alexander
Charcoal on paper
John Woodcock was cricket correspondent of The Times (1954 – 1988), editor of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack (1981 – 1986) and President of the Cricket Writers' Club (1986 – 2004), having been chairman in 1966.
The sitting for this portrait took place in Rupert Alexander’s Balham studio in South West London under a skylight. Natural light is key to Alexander’s work which is heavily influenced by Italian Baroque master Caravaggio, who is famous for using light and dark to create forms, a method known as chiaroscuro.
