This picture has all the traditional compositional elements of an 18th century British portrait – a sitter in formal dress standing in the classical ballet third position, first made popular by French portraitists to emphasise elegance and stature of the sitter. Nothing concrete is known of either the artist of sitter, though the latter appears to be an English gentleman of high status.
Trying to date a picture exactly by looking at the equipment is notoriously unrealisable because of artistic licence seen here in the treatment of the bat. There are no other examples in the MCC Collections showing a bat of these proportions.
