Descripción
Full length, three quarter turned portrait of a cricketer. Wearing a fedora-style sun hat. Arms folded.
In the age of curved bats the batsman had to stand to one side of the wicket
in order to strike a ball aimed at them. With straighter bats the batsman could
stand closer to the wicket; leading to the introduction of the first lbw law in 1774.
As padded leg-guards were introduced he was able to take blows on the legs
without serious injury. Deliberate use of the pads was still unusual until the
1880s when pitches became more reliable. Arthur Shewsbury was one of the
early masters of “pad play”.
