Andy Pankhurst (1968-)
Oil on canvas
Seated on the Pavilion concourse at Lord’s, Surrey and England top-order batsman and wicket-keeper Alec Stewart is shown facing the opposite direction to his team-mate Michael Atherton, painted at the same time to celebrate their partnership.
In the summer of 2000, Stewart and Atherton both played their 100th Test against West Indies at Old Trafford. Stewart marked the occasion with an innings of 105. One of Stewart’s greatest achievements came at Barbados in 1994 when innings of 118 and 143 helped England claim a first win over West Indies at the Kensington Oval in 59 years.
Artist Andy Pankhurst is inspired by sunny post-impressionist scenes. Here he examines the ‘bounced light’ from the block of lime green, representing the pitch, in Stewart’s white MCC shirt and upturned shirt. The portrait is twinned with Michael Atherton facing the opposite direction.
