As bowling practices changed, so there was a need for high cut, solid, supportive boots. This style is still evident, but we also see a range of football or trainer type boots. All the items on display show specific wear or some customisation to allow for a player’s action or injury.
M.2016.133.52.2 Gola Cricket Boot of Alan Knott.
Wicketkeeper Alan Knott wore Gola boots from 1973 and was heavily involved in equipment innovation. These boots have rubber inserts between the sole and the boot as Knott felt a lot of pain from studs coming through the sole. An earlier pair had a metal plate inserted, but this made them very heavy.

Originally blue as part of the World Series kit, Knott later painted them white to reuse them; the luggage tag details extra work Knott requested. He preferred the heel area to be stretched and lined with slippery, smooth leather to help with an Achilles problem. He also trialled plastic linings, but this caused problems as the moisture was not absorbed. These have ‘Champ’ brand screw in studs.
