Cricket Ties from the Rebel Tours to South Africa by Sri Lanka and West Indies, 1982-85 Acquired as part of the Keith Williams Tie Collection ??????
Sri Lanka had only just played its first Test in 1982 when Bandula Warnapura led their rebel tour under the initials of the manager as Arosa Sri Lanka. It was no surprise that they lost every match on tour and the players were given lifetime bans as well as being condemned across Asia and the Caribbean.
The West Indies XI players, paid poorly and infrequently in domestic cricket and struggling to be selected for one of the greatest Test teams of all-time led by Clive Lloyd, were tempted to tour (twice) by sums in excess of $100,000. The cricket was top class, the Springboks winning the one-day series 4-2 while the ‘Test’ series was drawn 1-1; on their return the West Indies XI won the Tests 2-1 and the one-day matches 4-2. All players were given life bans in 1983, rescinded in 1989, though all but one never played Test cricket again.
