British artist Tom Coates was commissioned by MCC in 1999/-2000 as part of its scheme to illustrate Test cricket in Test-playing nations across the world. He accompanied the England team to South Africa, covering the first Test at Newlands in Cape Town as well as further tour matches outside Test centres. He returned to the UK and put on a selling exhibition of his work at Lord’s; MCC holds several further examples of his work.
He has been described as a `prolific painter for whom technique is second nature’; never without his sketchbook he is a member of the Pastel Society (PS), Royal Society of British Artists (RBA), Royal Society of Portrait Painters (RP), Royal Watercolour Society (RWS) and Royal West of England Academy (RWA).
