Advertising Poster for Single Wicket Competition, 1979 M.2015.1002.62
Single wicket competitions were extremely popular at the end of the 1960s and into the 1970s and allowed the authorities to claim the return of `international cricket’ for those tournaments in South Africa. They also provided the perfect showcase for the wonderfully talented South Africans abroad; Barry Richards participated in a Batsman of the Year contest at the Oval in 1979 and Mike Procter and Eddie Barlow particularly excelled.
Procter played for Gloucestershire for 13 years with an outstanding record, never losing a major game at Lord’s, with the consequence that the county was nicknamed `Proctershire’. At the time of Botham, Hadlee, Imran and Kapil Dev it is no fancy to have supposed he was their South African equivalent, but he played in only seven Tests.
