Cream pith helmet covered in white wash. Green felt, leather and retailers stamp inside. Missing the leather strap across the brim which was present when donated.

Helmets did not start being generally worn until the late 1970’s, although as early as the 1930’s it was reported that Patsy Hendren wore a protective hat he designed himself. There is photographic evidence of Jack Hobbs wearing a pith helmet at the crease in 1928, similar to this one from Ceylon, now Sri Lanka

Also known as a ‘solar topee’ this Elwood, patented helmet was made from natural fibres and worn by Ceylon’s champion bowler of the time.
