With his smooth, classical action and ability to combine
pace with movement and guile, Ray Lindwall occupies
an place among the very greatest fast bowlers of all
time. Inspired by watching Harold Larwood as a child,
he himself would inspire a young Fred Trueman on his
first tour of England as one of Don Bradman’s
‘Invincibles’ of 1948. Lindwall captured 228 wickets in
61 Tests but was also a gifted batsman with two
centuries and five fifties at the same level. He formed a
lethal new-ball partnership with Keith Miller. He was
awarded the M.B.E. for services to cricket in 1965.
