- DescriptionBlack and white group portrait, mounted on card of South Africans. Three rows of gentlemen dressed in full cricket whites, all wearing caps with anchor and flower motif. Manager in a dark suit and bowler hat at the centre of the third row and slightly behind the players. Located in front of pavilion entrance with ornate railings and covered with foliage.
- Display captionSouth Africans at Sheffield Park, East Sussex, 22-23 May, 1894 Team Photograph M.2015.844 This was the first ever appearance by a South African XI in England, though the tour itself - initially backed by both George Logan and Cecil Rhodes (see previous caption) - was not notable either for the standard of play or for its financial success. Its organisation however did cause controversy with the ‘Malay’ (a term loosely used for Muslims or Asians) Krom Hendricks nominated for selection but discounted on account of his skin colour. Rhodes’ position was crucial in this decision, though it led Logan to withdraw his support for the tour, and another powerful political figure, Abe Bailey, was quoted as saying ‘Our men are going to England to learn rather than [to win] and under these circumstances it was not absolutely necessary to lift a coloured man upon account of the moral effect it might have in the whole coloured population.’ South Africa Exhibition, 2017
