This 1895 reproduction of a circa 1540 wood-cut print framed together with a letter offering the original oil painting to MCC and an article giving a detailed description of the scene.
The allegorical, biblical scene with episodes from the story of David and Bathsheba, is set in an extensive landscape with a Real Tennis game in progress. There are several versions of this scene; some contain mountains and others estuaries and sea coasts with a variety of buildings in different positions.
This scene was originally painted by Flemish Renaissance landscape painter Lucas Gassel.
