This boundary flag is the earliest known object to show the current MCC colours. The Club’s original colours were sky blue. It is thought that the adoption of the red and yellow might have been in gratitude to William Nicholson, who in 1866 advanced the Club the money necessary to purchase the freehold of Lord’s, thus saving the ground from possible development. Nicholson’s business activities included the sale of gin, in bottles with a distinctive red & yellow label.
