Head of a cricketer wearing white umpires’ hat and coat. Bat and scroll with letters TCCB (Test and County Cricket Board) for a handle.
The first character jug was launched by Doulton’s creative director and senior designer
Charles Noke in 1934. These jugs were initially based on characters from history,
literature or legend. In 1936 the first character jug modelled on a real person was
made. A key feature of the later design is the decorative handles that match the overall
style and theme of that particular character.
This jug is part of the Cricketers series issued to commemorate the achievements of
people who made an outstanding contribution to the Game. International cricket umpire
Harold Dennis Bird is modelled here in his umpires’ coat with Test and County Cricket Board
(TCCB) scroll around the bat-shaped handle.
